Notes

Racial tension gets a lot of attention from the media because it sells. It’s draws people’s attention like a fight in a parking lot. But is there a way to effectively talk about it?

Is white privilege really a thing?

Introduction

The definition of privilege is “advantage.” However, “white privilege” is not simply defined as “a white person’s advantage.” It is more complex than that.

How to do you define white privilege? And if possible, can you give a personal example of how white privilege impacted you or someone you know well?

[Note to leader (don’t read this part to the group): try and boil down each man’s definition into single statements. For example, restate it something like this: “Mike, I’m hearing you say ‘this.’ Walter, you’re describing it more like that,’ though.” You’re doing this to: 1) get confirmation that you’ve heard them right, and 2) make it clear that each man defines the term differently, based on their unique experience.]

If we all define white privilege differently, can a community talk about it effectively?

According to numbers from the US Census Bureau, it’s projected that non-Hispanic whites will become a minority in 2045.

In today’s world, does white privilege have anything to do with white majority?

Assuming you want to do something about white privilege, what could you do about it? Be specific.
