They were just men

Moses took dumps in the wilderness…whenever he was lucky enough to be in wilderness. Sometimes there was just desert. And sometimes he forgot the toilet paper.

David farted and blamed it on others, Abraham stared when sexy women walked by, and Jacob lost his temper for no apparent reason. And we know this because they were men. Just…like…us.

And that’s good news because, quite frankly, we don’t need the pressure.

We don’t need an image of Moses standing on a rock with his chest out, looking boldly across the Red Sea with his robe waving in the wind like Superman’s cape. We’re better off with a Moses who, despite everything he’d already seen, shat himself as God parted a sea right in front of him.

And we’d benefit more knowing David was confused sometimes, Abraham wanted to give up sometimes, and Jacob wanted to get drunk sometimes. Because then there’s hope for us.

If they were just men, then all those amazing things really happened because of God, not because they were so great. Don’t get me wrong…they were obedient and followed God…which was the greatest thing they could do. Plus, they were downright ballsy – and it earned them a front row seat to the action. But it was really God doing the amazing stuff. They just got to be a part.

And that feels good. That tells me all we have to do is focus on finding and following God.

Maybe he uses one of us to part a sea. Maybe he uses one of us to help build someone a home. Or maybe he uses one of us to listen to somebody and just care. In the end, you, Moses, and me might all be the same. We’re the guys in the moment, the ones on the ground, following God and doing our best.

I used to think that when we get to heaven, we’d sit around and listen to stories from guys like Moses and be impressed with them. But now, I think they’ll want to hear our stories too…and we’ll all be impressed with God.

I can’t wait to see Moses’ face when we tell him about heated toilet seats.
