Character: everyone agrees it’s important, but many disagree on what it is. It’s one of the most illusive, yet valued ideas on the planet, and we’re going to try and pin it down.

Does character matter?

Introduction

When asked the question, “Does character matter?” most would say, “Of course! All men value character.” However, when we dig into it and compare character to other virtues such as results…we find some pretty interesting conversations.

First, what’s your definition of character?

Others have defined character this way:

In circa 820 BC, Lycurgus of Sparta established three reforms for the military-based society. He made it illegal write these laws down. Instead, had to be internalized by all Spartans and become part of their character. They were:
• Equality (among citizens of Sparta only, everyone else was beneath them)
• Military fitness
• And austerity (which means sternness). 1

In 1726, Benjamin Franklin created a list of 13 virtues. He used these to define good character in all situations through out life. They were:
• Temperance
• Silence
• Order
• Resolution
• Frugality
• Industry
• Sincerity
• Justice
• Moderation
• Cleanliness
• Chastity
• Tranquility
• Humility 2

In 2500 years, good character went from “military fitness and austerity” to “tranquility and humility.” Should character be based on what is popular or based on absolutes? In other words, should it change over time?

How much does character matter in relation to results? Imagine you had a sliding scale and could adjust the mix of a person’s character vs. their results. You can’t set the scale to an even 50/50 mix – either character or results has to be more important.

Social change is happening faster than ever and values are quickly evolving (or devolving, depending on your perspective).

In 50 years, how will the world define a man with “good character?”
